Take care lest you forget!
I have been somewhat haunted by several versus I read recently, as I continue to carry out my commitment of reading through the Bible in a year. The versus which I seem to be dwelling on and struggling with, come from the book of Deuteronomy. Here they are: "Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God. Beware lest you say in your heart, 'My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.' And if you forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish. Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall you perish, because you would not obey the voice of the LORD your God. (Deuteronomy 8:11-14a, 17, 19-20)
As I survey what is going on in America today, I cannot help but think that the words of God spoken to the Israelites, by Moses, are words which we in the United States need to hear and take to heart as well. We as a society have been so greatly blessed and we are a land that is truly flowing with milk and honey. Why else do you think there are so many individuals from all over the world who desire to live in America? We are without a doubt a very prosperous nation and people, who have definitely been shown much undeserved favor by the Lord. But dear saints are we as a nation willing to acknowledge all the blessings, and where those blessings have come from? I am not really sure at this point in time.
Why would I make such a comment? Just take a look at the attack which is taking place on the Bible and its teachings. Take notice of the way Christianity is being assaulted and how Christians are being mocked. The Laws we have in our country have been established on biblical standards, yet there is a movement to remove the Bible from our public square and the courtroom. Morality is running at a dangerously low level, and the quest to be the master of our own destiny is the motivation for success in life. We have created our own gods; money, power, status, cars, homes, ect, ect.
The warning God gave Moses about following such a path, a path that forgets Him, is as valid for us today as it was for Israel 3400 years ago. God is still in control, and He will not be mocked or made a fool. This is serious stuff folks and not something for us to pass off. We cannot succumb to the ways of our modern culture. Jesus dealt with this mentality and pressure in His day, and as His disciples He said we would also. May you and I call upon the Lord to strengthen us for the battle at hand. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Proverbs 9:10 I pray our nation and its citizens get back to fearing (respecting with great respect) the Lord> Pastor McCarty
